Ruby in Sanskrit is Ratnaraj, which means the King of Gems. It often commands the highest price per carat in comparison to all the other colored gem stones. Ruby is a variety of corundum, the colors range from orangy red to purplish red.

Trace elements like Chromium cause the deep red color in Ruby. The more chromium present the deeper the red color.

The most renowned rubies come from Myanmar and the Himalayas, which are marble hosted, However in recent years rubies found in Eastern Africa can compare to the Burmese ruby qualities.

Rubies are also basalt rock hosted and are found in Thailand, Vietnam, Sri Lanka, Madagascar and Mozambique.
