Sapphires are from the mineral species corundum, which is the same species as Ruby however it depends on the color to distinct pink sapphire from Ruby.

Blue sapphire color ranges from greenish blue to violetishblue, Kashmiri sapphires are the most prized color.

Fancy sapphires can come in any color  violet, green, yellow, orange, pink, colorless, grey and intermediate hues, depending on the trace elements that color the sapphire. There are also parti-colored sapphires which show a combination of two colors. Sapphires can also have a color changing phenomena, depending on the type of lighting. They could also have asterism, known as Star Sapphires.

Sapphires  can come in a very wide range of colors. Some fancy sapphires like Parpadasha ‘Lotus Blossom’ (Pinkish Orange) are scarce and are very expensive to buy.

Both blue and fancy sapphires come from exotic sources such as Madagascar, Tanzania, Sri Lanka, Myanmar and Australia.

Please note 90% of the sapphires sold are generally heated, it is a very common treatment which is widely accepted in the jewelry trade.
